Kathy Tolleson and Ashley Henderson

Thank you, Ashley Henderson, for organizing a great event on Sunday night, December 23, 2012, at the Mosqueda Community Center.  Members of the Ocheltree Shepherding Group were on hand to help wrap the donated gifts at the Toys for Tots distribution, sponsored by Reading and Beyond.  We were all blessed to be there.  Phillip got to use his "Spanglish", Carolyn had the Christmas shoppers teach her simple phrases in Spanish, like "God bless you", Andrew helped in toy selection and discovered his inner "wrap artist", while Kathy Tolleson was a cheerful holiday consultant to the parents and children selecting toys.  Lex and Avery Henderson also were jolly consultants to the Christmas shoppers while Ashley Henderson kept the whole process going.  Afterward, Phillip commented that he hadn't really felt very energetic about going beforehand.  But, after the event, he was filled with new energy.  Isn't that the way giving works?  We receive more than we give!
Looking forward to more service projects together.  Buy up those orange shirts!

Farewell to Jacob

"Precious in the sight of the Lord
Is the death of His godly ones."
Psalm 116:15 (New American Standard Version)

We ended our study yesterday on the life of Jacob and his 12 sons with Jacob's death and state funeral and Joseph's death.  It has been a very colorful 12-week study of this Old Testament patriarch. Each of the other patriarchs had one son who was a genuine Jew and one who was not.  Abraham had Ishmael, the counterfeit, and Isaac, the genuine Jew.  Isaac had Esau, the counterfeit and Jacob, the genuine Jew.  But Jacob had 12 sons, each one of whom was the genuine article, a true Jew, destined to bring God's light into the world through the nation of Israel.

Interestingly enough, though, we don't hear nearly the number of scandalous stories coming from the counterfeit sons, Ishmael and Esau, that we hear coming from the genuine Jews, like Levi and Simeon, who massacred an entire village of men in a revenge killing, or Reuben, who committed incest, or Judah who solicited a prostitute. Why?

As I mentioned previously in this blog about the life the of Jacob, it's not what we do that shows our true faith, it's what we do with what we do.  Everyone sins.  Not everyone repents.  Esau is described in the New Testament as a "godless and immoral" man, not because of the scandals associated with his name, but because of his utter disregard for the things of God.  Esau never felt the need to repent of his sin of indifference toward God.  Why should he?

Ishamael became the father of nations that opposed God's people, the Jews.  Again, he felt no need to repent of his contempt for Isaac, his half-brother, the promised son of Abraham, the great patriarch.  Why should he repent?  Wasn't it his mother who was mistreated by Isaac's mother, after all?  Doesn't that justify grudge-bearing?

The nation of Israel would never have begun and grown like it did without the power of forgiveness and grace.  Jacob had to forgive his sons for selling Joseph into slavery and deceiving him into thinking Joseph was dead.  Joseph had to forgive his brothers and be willing to provide for their well-being in Egypt.  The brothers had to forgive one another and themselves for what they had done.  In order to function as a unit, which these 12 men needed to do in order to become the fathers of the 12 tribes of Israel, they had to forgive and be forgiven.  And that is the difference between a sinner and a saint.

What makes the death of a godly one precious to God?  Being forgiven.

Recruiting for Uptown

Louise Stuckert invites us to participate in Uptown
Childrens' Ministry

Thanks to Louise Stuckert, who came to the Ocheltree Shepherding Group last Sunday to recruit for Uptown Childrens' Ministry.  Louise is putting together a "data base" (that's electronic-eze for a list of volunteers) of people who want to participate in the blessing of teaching our children on Sundays.  The teaching assignments are two months apiece, beginning with a January-February, 2013 assignment.  Teachers can work in arts and crafts, storytelling and drama, active games or history and geography.  The curriculum is all prepared for the teachers and is very user-friendly.  You will be blessed when (not if) you volunteer!  Be sure to add your name to Louise's data base.  You can catch her on Sunday mornings around church or contact her by email at: lfstuckert@gmail.com or dalestuckert@att.net, or by telephone: (Home) 559-298-0561 or (Cell) 571-213-7564 (Notice different area code!)

Angel Tree-The Sequel

Robert and Robyn Gonzales and Cindy McGrady with
the Angel Tree gifts on Sunday, December 16, 2012
Our church family gave 110 gifts to 55 children with the Angel Tree ministry this year.  Angel Tree provides Christmas gifts for the children of parents who are incarcerated.  These videos are a brief sampling of the fun our men had shopping for children's gifts on December 3.  What a joy to participate in this wonderful ministry!

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me somethng to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.'"  Mathew 25:34-36 (New International Version)

The Ramirez family Christmas-2012

Thank you to all who helped provide Christmas basket food and presents for the Ramirez family in Firebaugh!  Gary Pendleton delivered the gifts and food on Saturday, December 15, 2012.  We are indeed blessed, as a church family, this holiday season, to live out our Lord's words: "It is more blessed to give than to receive." Acts 20:35
May the peace and joy of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, be with you all this Christmas!

Refugee Christmas Party

It tastes like chicken...really!

Dia Martinez and I attended the Christmas party for the Fresno Interdenominational Refugee Ministry (FIRM) at their office on Fresno Street, between Clinton and McKinley avenues, this afternoon.  When the Hmong girl offered me hot sauce on my rice, I asked for more and she hesitated.  I complained that ethnic people never want to give white people hot sauce because they think we are all wimps.  I will never say that again at a Hmong occasion.  Their hot sauce makes the hottest Mexican salsa taste like ketchup!
The mission statement of FIRM is "Sharing Christ's Love To Build Communities of Hope With New Americans."  There are a variety of ways to become involved with the numerous ministries FIRM does within the community.

"For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.  He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the alien, giving him food and clothing.  And you are to love those who are aliens, for you yourselves were aliens in Egypt."  Deuteronomy 10:17-19 (New International Version)

Cookies for Habitat for Humanity

Homemade chocolate chip

And chocolate crackles...

Iced oatmeal raisin

Cookie Central!

Mushroom and leaves...just testing your attention span!

Thank you to all the wonderful bakers who brought in fresh, homemade cookies to distribute to the Habitat for Humanity volunteers at Christmas time!  It was an exercise in self-restraint, hauling all those cookies across town to the Habitat office and not eating them!  May God bless each of you for your generosity in baking and giving and may God bless the wonderful volunteers who receive those cookies and the love in each bite!

Ladies' Ornament Exchange

26 women gathered at Robin Button's home for an evening
of fellowship

Hostess Robin  Button lights up the whole room with her necklace!

No wonder ladies are always on a diet!

Ornaments for all!

Ladies enjoy the holiday warmth

Thank you, Robin Button, for hosting a lovely evening of fun, food and fellowship, in your home on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012.  Seriously, it's no wonder we all have to diet all the time, with so many good cooks in this crowd!  New recipes and old traditional family favorites were all part of the light buffet supper.  Each guest left with a new ornament for her home and, more importantly, deeper bonds of love and friendship with her fellow women of College Church of Christ.

Sue Group Celebration

Gene Sue leads prayer in "the circle"

Grandpa David Douglass

Sue Group Takes The Cake

As is his custom, Gene gathered all the people in the room into a circle, joining hands on Sunday morning, to pray.  The Sue Group celebrated 20 years of God's blessings, through good times and bad, through sickness and health, and through the parting of many loved ones through death.  Many people have been blessed to be placed inside that circle through the years, hands laid on them, and the church family praying over spiritual matters, finances, health, marriages, children... We have seen God work miracles of faith, healing, love, joy, peace and sweet fellowship as a result of these prayers.

Tables at the back of the room featured prayer requests and praises throughout the years.  Casey Sue, Gene's son, called his youngest son, Joshua, over to show him his birth announcement among the praise reports.  There were photographs of service projects such as the "City of Children" orphanage in Mexico and the Homeless Ministry at Santa Clara and F Streets in Fresno each month.  There were pictures of parties for Halloween, the Pismo Beach camping trip and many other church family traditions.

Gene and Linda have modeled for us, in their own lives, how to love unconditionally, but also be no-nonsense about righteous living.  I cannot think of anything more Christ-like than that!  Well done, good and faithful servants!  May the Sue Group enjoy 20 more years of meaningful ministry!

Christmas Cheer!
Our high school students enjoyed a wonderful evening of "progressive dining" on Friday night.  They met at the church, in the Uptown lobby of our Children's Ministry.  Then, they proceeded to the home of Marshall and Rachel Hamm, where they were treated to "twice baked potatoes" and homemade jalapeno poppers.  Considering that the Hamms just moved into their home last week, we think this is a Christmas miracle!

The group then proceeded to Tannon and Theresa Pafford's home, where they dined on salad, bacon-wrapped filet (prepared by barbecue chefs Tannon Pafford and Luke Oehlschlaeger) and creamy mashed potatoes, prepared by "Mama Mandy" Oehlschlaeger.  The Paffords even moved their sofa into the garage for the evening to accommodate the crowd!

Then, the grand finale took place clear across town at the home of Bruce and Cathi Ferri, where the high school students enjoyed Christmas cookies, cupcakes and candy, as well as a lively white-elephant gift exchange.  Cozy socks were the most popular gift-exchange item, while the most memorable gift was probably the bank shaped like a pile of, pile of, well, let's just say it looked like something the Ferri's St. Bernard puppy left on the front lawn!

Thank you to Aaron and Sarah Scott, to our hosts, and drivers for a wonderful and memorable evening!

Family Suppers

If I could give our church staff and elders a "Zagat Rating" for their delicious church family suppers on Wednesday nights, it would be the very highest possible rating.  Bon Appetit to Doug Baker for a wholesome and delicious bowl of vegetable soup last night!  To Lee Smith for a pheneomenal pork loin (the secret was in the spicy sauce!).  To Aaron Scott for his Chicken Spaghetti--a crowd pleaser every time!  To Sandra Henderson for her mouth-wateringingly tasty pulled pork sandwiches.  And to Jason Locke with some alarmingly good chili and corn bread!  We appreciate your culinary prowess and your willingness to serve us in yet another way!

It is possible that the fine men and women who lead us would like some other chefs to join the circuit--think of it as an opportunity to be the star on your own Food Network show!  Let's talk about forming some "chef groups" for Wednesday night meals in the new year.  I believe we will be more blessed than we are a blessing as we participate in the tradition of making and breaking bread together as a church family.

We'll talk more about this in Shepherding Group....
