God and I have been “Best Friends Forever” for many years
now. But I don’t always agree with His taste in “best friends”. I think He
could do better. When I tell him so, however, He reminds me that He needs a
best friend who won’t judge Him for His taste in friends. A good friend is supposed to have enough
faith in you to believe you are capable of making good decisions. A best friend
is supposed to love you unconditionally. Even if a best friend doesn’t always
understand your choices, they are supposed to be tolerant and accepting, not
judgmental and critical. And so, in order to be a good friend to my best friend, I have to accept Him,
believe in Him, and respect His choices as being made by Someone who is
intelligent and informed.
“I have called you friends…” John 15:15 (New American
Standard Version)
“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord
your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the
peoples who are on the face of the earth. The Lord did not set His love on you
nor choose you because you were more in number than any of the peoples, for you
were the fewest of all peoples, but because the Lord loved you and kept the
oath which He swore to your forefathers, the Lord brought you out by a mighty
hand, and redeemed you from the house of slavery, from the hand of Pharaoh king
of Egypt.” Deuteronomy 7:7-9 (New American Standard Version)
